Are Theme Parks too Pricey?

I read my twitter timeline with envy a couple of weekends ago, where we saw a variety of celebrities and bloggers all enjoying a stay at the new Legoland Hotel. It had the desired affect on me and I went off to check prices and availability.

I was a little horrified to discover that it would cost me £584 for one night and two days park entry, for my son's birthday at the end of April.  That is a huge amount of money, especially in these tough times, so sadly we will have to rethink our plans.

It made me wonder what other theme parks were charging, so here is my research.

In terms of fairness I have chosen the weekend of 21st-22nd April 2012 and am looking for a room for 2 adults, 3 under 16's and an under 2.

Alton Towers With hotel and one days park entry it is £382.50.  For park entry only it is £126.00 if booked online.

Thorpe Park:  Park entry only is £165.50.  They do not have an onsite hotel and all local ones are fully booked

Chessington World of Adventures:  Park entry only is £103.32 if booked online, again there is no availability in their hotel.

Drayton Manor:  Park entry £125 plus £201 to stay in Drayton Manor hotel = £326

Legoland:  Park entry only £170.10

This has been a real shock and it does make me wonder how the average family can afford these prices, seeing as you need to add travel, food, drink and spending money on top.

If you are determined to try a theme park this year, then I strongly advide you check out Raring2Go as they have some great half price offers at the moment.

I'm off for a lie down..............................................................................

I am a Mum and I am proud of all my children!

I was catching up on some blog ready reading the other evening and came across the wonderful post by @kateab entitled Why I will no longer apologise for being proud of my children.

The post really hit home with me, as I do tweet or facebook how proud I am of all my children, whether it be a new tooth, a good parents evening or passing a Driving Test.  Why shouldn't I?

I use my own personal facebook to connect with genuine friends and family members.  I rarely use it if I am honest, but with family dotted around the country it is a good way to keep in touch.  Twitter is another matter - I love to tweet and have developed some really good online friendships and want to share the good news.  After all, we are all there for the bad stuff, so why not the good?

It's not about oneupmanship, my children have all had their moments, and I am sure they'll have plenty more.  They do thrive on praise though, whether it be to their face or a facebook update and that should be encouraged.  Think how you feel if you get a good review at work - you get a spring in your step, so why isn't it any different for them?

That is why I am joining Kate and am proudly displaying her "Proud Parents Club" badge on my blog!

Go on, admit it...........you are a proud parent too!

Extreme Close Up

I love taking part in The Gallery and this week is no exception.  Today we have to display an extreme close up shot.

When we had our wedding photographs taken we spotted a dragonfly darting along the stream.  This started a bit of a love affair with this beautiful creature, and we can often be found trying to get "that" shot.

Dragonfly

Here is one we found whilst enjoying a day out at Honeybrook Farm - gorgeous isn't it?

A Mothers Work Meme

This is a spooky one, I favourited mother.wife.me's post over the weekend and now the ever so lovely MummyGlitzer has tagged me to take part too.

So, lets start with the rules:

  • Post the rules.
  • Answer the questions in as much or as little detail as suits you.
  • Leave a comment on mother.wife.me so we can keep track of the meme.
  • Tag 3 people and link them to your blog.
  • Let them know you’ve tagged them.
  • Tweet loudly about taking part (well OK, that isn’t a rule but how about if we start a hashtag – #amothersworkmeme).
Questions:

Did you work before becoming a mum?

Yes.  When I was at school I had a variety of weekend / holiday jobs including paper rounds, cafe work and BHS.  At 16 I joined Tesco on their checkouts whilst studying for my A-Levels and sort of just stayed!  I had Abbey at 18, so a job with Tesco suited me and I then took part in their management training course and went on to become a Customer Service & Checkout Manager.  I stayed with them until 2005 and then I decided I wanted a change of direction and began working for an American Investment Bank as a Client Service Supervisor for FX and Options.

What is your current situation?

I left the bank in December 2011 and am now setting up as a childminder as we could not afford to have two under 4's in childcare.  I am almost there - just waiting my certificates and have my first child booked in from mid April!  I never thought I would enjoy staying at home, as have always been fairly career orientated, but I love it!

Freestyle: Got you own point you’d like to get across about this issue? Well, here’s your chance…

I understand that the government have to make cutbacks, but they are currently penalising those who have worked bloody hard to get to a decent job.  We are no longer entitled to any help with childcare costs and it makes it an unworkable situation.  If childcare places were automatically offered free for so many hours for children from the age of 1, I am sure more people would work and would be less stressed.

I also feel that the hours of childcare available often don't fit in with modern jobs.  Pretty much all retail jobs now expect you to work at least one weekend day and many require evening hours too.  That is why I am offering weekend and evening childcare!  I also feel that requiring a deposit of 4 weeks in advance is unrealistic too, especially when many parents have been out of work.

Now its my turn to nominate.......... I choose you:

This Little Piggy Saved at Work

This is entry for the BritMums Piggy Bank Tales competition, sponsored by Virgin Money.

Saving money can feel impossible, especially in these tough economic times and if I am honest I stopped saving when my Maternity leave stopped, however, I am safe in the knowledge that hubby is still managing to save something using his company's Save as you Earn scheme.

If you are working, especially for a big company, I highly recommend you check if they operate a "Save as you Earn scheme".  These typically run alongside each financial year, and the company take the money directly from your wages, so you don't miss it.

So what is it?

SAYE is a tax-efficient cash saving scheme that lets you save towards buying shares in your company.
At the end of the term you have the option to buy shares in your company or take out your savings in cash.
The scheme has two components: a savings contract and a share option.

The savings plan offers a guaranteed return so is a no-risk investment. You can choose how much you save and for how long. At the end of the contract you'll be able to use all or part of your savings, plus any bonus if applicable, in order to buy shares in your company at the option price.

The Share option lets you share in the success of your company. When you join the savings contract a special share price is set (known as the option price). If the shares have increased in value when the contract is finished, you can buy them at the option price. It's an effective way of buying shares at a discounted price and lets you enjoy the benefits of share ownership.
I saved in plans like this when I worked for Tesco and when these plans matured (typically after 3 or 5 years), they were a nice healthy sum, even when saving a small amount of money.  They helped buy our car, pay for our wedding and honeymoon and the deposit for our house.

If your company doesn't offer this, then if you can arrange a standing order to come out of your account on payday which is credited to a Savings account, then you will be surprised at how the smallest amount builds into something bigger.  I highly recommend you speak to your bank to get the best advise for you, but do shop around as there are some good offers out there.  Remember, the banks want your business too!

I have to admit that saving isn't fun, but it is a necessity.  Gone are the days of racking up credit and then struggling to pay it off.........lets save for what we want and take pleasure in the fact that we did it ourselves!!

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter

When I was invited to attend a preview event at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter, I could barely contain my excitement.  I have adored the Harry Potter series of books since I discovered them with my daughter 12 years ago and now my 11 year old is discovering the brilliance of the series.

When each and every Harry Potter film was released, I was always one of the first to see them at the cinema and whilst I bemoaned the fact the film missed certain pieces from the books out, you could not deny their brilliance and you were guaranteed to be transported to the magical world of Hogwarts and beyond.

As with any day out with children, we packed the essentials, loaded them into the car and set off.  The directions were easy - Junction 19 off the M25.  In fact you can't miss it if you try as it is signposted very well!

There is plenty of parking too, which is well laid out with good sized parking spaces.  We also spotted two buses emblazoned with Harry Potter images which will transport visitors to and from the station if you choose to travel by train.

In front of the buildings we were greeted by three of the chess pieces from Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, giving us the first photo opportunity of the day, after which we ventured inside.

The lobby was huge and surrounded by huge pictures of the stars of the films as well as some props, which really added to the excitement.  To the left was a good sized cafe, Starbucks and the toilets and to the right was a good sized information desk and somewhere to leave your coats!  Genius idea!

All tickets MUST be pre-booked by visiting http://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/ or through an approved tour operator as no tickets will be available to buy at the attraction.  Visitors are booked into 30 minute time slots throughout the day to ensure the flow of people is regulated, meaning a more enjoyable visit for all.  This is a wonderful idea - we queued for around 10 minutes before our tour started, but were treated to hand impressions of the main stars, and a view of the cupboard under the stairs in Privet Drive where Harry spent much of his early life.  The boys were also given a passport, containing fun facts, a find the Golden Snitch challenge and stamps to collect.

Once we were ushered into the first room, we were given a brief run down of the tour by one of the guides and shown a short film about how the books were discovered.  Next we went into a cinema room and got to see a show reel of some of the best moments from the films, with interviews from Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.  I am not going to spoil it by telling you what happens next, only to say it was one of the highlights of our day!

The first port of call was the Great Hall.  We were told some fascinating facts by the tour guide and then left to explore and take photographs.  There really is just so much to see!  Beyond the hall we were able to explore at our own pace, with lots of interactive stations, TV screens and staff dotted about the place to answer any questions.

I was surprised to learn that all the props, sets and costumes are authentic and were created and used in the Harry Potter series.  You can see the Gryffindor dorm, common room, Dumbledor's Office, Hagrids House and so much more.  The studio tour also reveals the secrets of film making and gives a "behind-the-scenes" look at the creative process of the production.  It is fascinating for children and adults alike and my 11 year old was sat transfixed watching a film of how they did the special effects.  I was worried the little ones may be bored but they thoroughly enjoyed it too as there is so much to see.

There is also a chance to "fly" in the Weasley's Ford Anglia and on a broomstick, using green screen technology.  You get to see yourself flying over countryside, through London and over Hogwarts.  Sadly you cannot buy the video, but you can buy photographs of your adventure.  One photograph costs £12, but if there is a number of you (or you want every photo) the price is staggered up to £20 for 4 photo's.
So this is what they get up to when mum isn't around!
After the flying experience, we proceeded through the ministry of magic to a partially covered outside area.  There is a refreshment van, serving tea, coffee, snacks and Butterbeer!!  (The only place outside America that you can buy Butterbeer).  Beware of giving too much to the kids though as it's full of sugar but utterly delicious!  There is also a chance to take your own photographs aboard the Night Bus, the Weasley's Ford Anglia, Hagrids Bike and outside Harry's house in Privet Drive.

The next stage of the tour is the special make up effects.  Beware of some very scary looking creatures, which I thought may upset the little ones, but they were completely unfazed by it all.  There is a lovely film featuring Warwick Davies who talks you through the make up process too.

Just around the next corner is Diagon Alley - another highlight and a great picture opportunity! The attention to detail is astonishing and we all got a little bit excited to see Gringots and Olivanders.

Coming out of Diagon Alley we were shown models, diagrams and artists impressions of how everything was designed.  There was some truly stunning artwork on display, but nothing prepared me for what was next.................Hogwarts itself.  I turned a corner and there it was, bathed in moonlight with lights twinkling in the windows.  I have to admit I had goosebumps!  The lights gradually change to take you through to daylight and back again, so you can see Hogwarts in all its glory.  There were more interactive screens around the outside which showed you how it was built and how they used a green screen to get the actors to appear "in and around" the building.

Next stop was Olivanders (my tip is to read as many wand boxes as you can and discover a secret or cheat and ask assistant) and lastly to the shop, which sells Harry Potter themed lines which are mainly exclusive to the UK and include pocket money items as well as collectibles.  There was also another photo opportunity to have a picture put on a wanted poster - this we had to do!!
The poster is too big to scan in full - but here is the pic!

So what does it cost?

Tickets cost £28 for adults, £21 for children (over 4 years) and a family ticket is £83 so it is not a cheap family day out.  The pictures are a fabulous addition to the tour and are a great keepsake, so you will need to factor those in too.  We avoided spending money in the shop by getting the pictures instead, so spent £40 on extras, but you could end up spending a small fortune as there were so many wonderful trinkets, costumes and collectibles to snap up.

Food and drink is reasonable, although a small cup of Butterbeer is £2.95 (we shared ours), but with the average tour lasting around 3 hours, you can get away with not needing to eat if you don't want to.  There are plenty of toilet facilities throughout the tour and baby changing can be found in the disabled toilets.  This is a walking attraction and it is all level so is perfect for prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs, with plenty of places to sit down and have a rest if need be.

So, was it worth it?

YES, YES, YES! - It is a great day out for all the family, especially older children and teens!  Every single member of staff we spoke to was friendly, easy to talk to and really knew their stuff.

My only disappointment is that I wanted to try on the Sorting Hat to discover which house I was in!

You can also find Warner Brothers Studio Tour on facebook or follow them on twitter for more news and special offers!

This brand new attraction officially opens to visitors on 31st March 2012.

Learning a valuable lesson

Being the parent of teenagers it frustrates me that in this day and age, they are not encouraged to go out and get a part-time weekend job.

In fact, if they are under 16 it is nigh on impossible!

Why?

There are so many legislation's now that employers just won't take them on:

Working conditions limitations

Young people aged between 13 and the minimum school-leaving age may not do any work, paid or unpaid:

  • before 07.00 or after 19.00
  • for more than two hours on a school day or Sunday
  • before the close of school hours (however, local authority bylaws may allow young people to work for one hour before school)
  • for more than 12 hours a week during term time
  • for more than five hours (13 to 14 year olds) or eight hours (15 to 16 year olds) on Saturdays and during school holidays on weekdays
  • for more than 25 hours in total a week - 35 hours if aged 15 or over - during school holidays
  • for more than four hours without taking a break of at least one hour
  • in any occupations prohibited by local bylaws or other legislation, for example in any industrial setting, pubs, betting shops, or in any work that may be harmful to their health, well-being or education

In addition, young people must have a two-week break from any work during the school holiday in each calendar year.

I remember having jobs from the age of 12 doing paper rounds, working in an Ice Cream kiosk, a nursery (plant kind) and a little cafe.  It gave me my own bit of Independence and helped teach me the value of money.  I didn't have to bug my parents to by the latest issue of Just 17 or the latest cassette single (remember them?).

We were fairly lucky that when my daughter turned 13, she took on the local free paper round and she did that role for 2 years until she was made redundant - they stopped the free paper thanks to budget cuts.  She then took on another paper round, delivering the local Daily Echo, which was a lot poorer paid and she was unable to find anything else until she turned 16.

Because of the demand for paper rounds, the only local newsagent offering them has a waiting list of over 50 people, meaning it is unlikely that the boys will get a chance to earn any money before they turn 16.

In this day and age, kids need to earn to be able to top up their mobile phone, or pay for their music downloads etc.  As parents we cannot afford to keep paying for this, especially with all the cut backs we have had to make.  Work teaches them a valuable lesson that the world does not in fact owe them a living, which appears to be a very common thought in the minds of teenagers and young people these days.

So what do you think - did you work as youngster and did it give you a good work ethic?  Do you think that our children should be encouraged to earn their own money?

Mrs Dress Up - Bespoke costumes for your little ones

I want to introduce you all to Mrs Dress Up.  Another one of my twitter finds, she is not only lovely to chat to at @mrsdressup71 but she makes the most adorable children's dressing up clothes.

My first purchase was this beautiful Tutu for Eliza.  Not only could I choose the size, but I could choose the colours too.  Being a Chelsea fan, I had to go for blues and whites - how cute does she look?

These are hand-made, bespoke tulle and/or organza tutus for dress-up. They have a ribbon-wrapped elastic (non-roll) waist for comfort.  They are very full and floaty and the ribbon is stitched closed at the bow so little hands can't unravel it.

The quality of the Tutu was second to none so my next question to Mrs Dress Up was could she make bespoke outfits......"why of course" she said.  So here is my next purchase:

Who do you think I am?
Mrs Dress Up sourced all the clothes in this costume and stitched the vest top to the shirt.  She also made the fab utility belt which I think really makes this outfit (which can now be bought separately).  As you can imagine, Isaac was a huge hit at the recent fancy dress birthday party he attended (especially with the mums)!!

Mrs Dress Up has her own blog and has shops on both Etsy and eBay. and I just have to show you some of her other creations (I want the dinosaur tail!):
Cowboy Chaps
Dinosaur Tail
Chainmail Tunic and Blue Overtunic

Super Hero Masks

I could add lots more pictures, but why not have a look at her site.  Everything is made with love and the customer service is fantastic!  If you can't see what you want then just ask - Mrs Dress Up is always happy to help!

Please also "like" her facebook page as at 200 likes she is giving away a doctors / nurses scrubs uniform!

My Mothers Day Disappointment

I know Mother's Day is just another day in the calendar, but I actually got upset yesterday.

My three youngest children (ably assisted by daddy) managed to buy me a beautiful Orchid, a "Best Mummy" Mug and a lovely (if a little cheeky) card.  Isaac even made me a lovely card with a picture of an orchid to match my new plant.

Why am I upset then?

My two oldest didn't bother!

Well, I say didn't bother.......I got a half hearted text from oldest child, but no card, no phone call, no nothing.  She works full time, granted but it is not like its a sudden addition to the calendar.  I shouldn't be surprised though, as she did the same on my birthday and Christmas.

Oldest son - nothing at all.  Not even a facebook update to acknowledge that I even exist.

I waited until I blogged this, just in case a card was posted last minute, but nothing.

Despite this disappointment I had a lovely day yesterday visiting my dad and his wife followed by a lovely walk around the local Marina.........

BUT

I am still upset!

Do you dream of a Gok Wan style makeover?

I have been having conversations about having a makeover on twitter for the last few weeks.  I dream of Gok Wan taking me shopping and styling me to the nines (I don't fancy being put on a billboard in my undies mind).

Sadly that isn't going to happen, but when I was asked to try iStylista I jumped at the chance.

So what is iStylista?

iStylista.com was launched in May 2009 as the online personal stylist, using the expertise of its founder Chantelle Znideric, professional stylist to the rich and famous.  Clients are invited to register by completing their very own ‘Style File’ and then to browse and purchase only the most suitable designer clothing handpicked by the iStylista.com personal stylists.  Members have unlimited access to their private online changing room which presents them with items matching their specifications. Customers are a click away from their personal stylist and a whole new designer wardrobe

I have to admit I was worried by the phrase "designer" as to me my first reaction is expensive, but I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

Firstly, I had to download the Style Goddess Style Guide and complete the forms.

For the first questions it asked what shape I am.  It does give good descriptions of the shapes, but I would have preferred to enter my measurements and it tell me.  I have always thought I am an apple shape, but now I think I am a rectangle. (I prefer that too)

The next step was to decide what size I am.  Now depending on which shop I am in that changes too.  Again I feel measurements would have been more beneficial, but I chose a 12 on top and a 14 bottom.  It also asked for shoe sizes too.  We then moved on to face shape, skin tone, colours, height, lifestyle and problem areas.

The form didn't take long to fill in and I proceeded to download the advice guide.

This is where my initial concerns vanished.  My 30 page style guide was in front of me.  It is full to the brim of wonderful advice you would normally see Gok Wan dishing out, but it's all in front of you to read at your leisure and come back to as and when you need it.  The first thing I need to do is buy some good supportive undies - my worn out Nursing Bra's are on their last legs!  The recommended colours are full of the ones I actually wear, so it is nice to know I was getting something right too!

Now for the fun bit...........they suggest items for your wardrobe.  There are a number of categories - you can sort by tops / trousers / dresses / knitwear/ swimwear etc, or occasions.  You can even add your own personal style be it urban or feminine etc.

Admittedly there are designer options, with the designer price tag, but I was pleasantly surprised to find affordable items from the likes of Dorothy Perkins and Oasis.  You can click and buy through the iStylista website too, so there is not trawling through individual web pages trying to find the dress you have just seen.  I have my heart set on a denim dress from Oasis and am off to try some recommended jeans too!

If you are still struggling for ideas, you can enlist the help of a personal shopper.  Every personal stylist featured has undergone professional training, has traded for at least 6 months and has credible testimonials. What’s more, when you find a personal stylist that you want to work with, they will give you a NO OBLIGATION, 15 minute Skype or telephone consultation.

I have 10 Personalised Style Goddess Style guides to give away but if you can't wait to try it you can buy one.  They are priced at £30 but I have 40% discount on Style Goddess style guides to offer to my readers - just use this code:  R4E6-3YD4-VR.

A Domestic Disaster

This is my entry into the Tots 100 and Morphy Richards Innovators Wanted competition.

When we viewed our house prior to buying it, the real selling point was the gorgeous bathroom with the large Roll Top bath and the Gothic style fixtures and fittings.  This was the one room that was "done", but the rest of the house needed work.

Suffice to say we bought the house and have spent the last 6 years doing it up.  We never thought it would take so long, but as naive first time buyers you don't understand the costs involved, but - I had my dream bathroom and a long relaxing soak in "that" bath was heavenly.

Bathtime
Eliza enjoying bathtime

So where is this going you ask - why is it a domestic disaster?

In 2008 we welcomed another addition into the family - Isaac.  My beautiful bouncing baby boy who grew into a bright inquisitive toddler with a particular love of water.  He would spend an hour in the bath if he could and loved splashing and swimming and general water play.

In summer 2010 when he was 2, we had a new kitchen installed (finally).  After a week of hard work, takeaways and stress it was finished but it was worth it - it looked gorgeous.

I was very protective of my nice new kitchen, and I was lovingly cleaning it whilst my three oldest took their little brother up for a bath.

Cue bath time disaster:

Add one Isaac, one big sister and two big brothers to keep an eye on him

add

One jug

I am not entirely sure what exactly happened next, but it was something along the lines of a water fight.  They were told to stop and quieten down and that they did.  Only it went too quiet!!

As a parent you know that eerie silence that means that they are doing something they shouldn't be!

Water started appearing on the work surface of my lovely new kitchen.  I thought hubby had spilt some from the kettle, but he denied all knowledge.  It was only when we started to investigate where it was coming from that we realised it was dripping from the ceiling, down the brand new cupboards and pooling on the work surface.

A mad dash upstairs and we discovered Isaac merrily scooping up water in a jug and throwing it over the side of the bath!  If you have ever seen a roll top bath you will know that it isn't sealed to the wall but freestanding.  Ours is surrounded by 3 walls so is inaccessible from all angles other than the front.

Isaac was hastily removed from said bath and I tried in vain to mop up the remaining water by trying to edge myself under the bath (which stands less than a foot off the floor) and thrust towels at the ever spreading puddle.

You would think that would be it - right?................Wrong

Hubby, seeing a crack in the kitchen ceiling where the water was dripping from decides in his infinite wisdom, to stick his finger in it..........The worst thing he could possibly ever do!  A great big chunk of ceiling came down along with a shower of  more mucky water.

The worst part is - we've still not fixed it as funds haven't allowed.

Trying to disguise the hole with an empty tin!

There are three morals of this story:

  • roll top baths and young children don't mix!!
  • don't let your teenagers bath a toddler as they love water play too!
  • don't let your DIY phobic hubby anywhere near a leak!

Mothers Day Meme

I have been tagged (again) but the lovely Mummy Glitzer to take part on the Mothers Day Meme as created by More than a Mum.

Its a nice simple one, where I just answer a few questions, so here goes.........

Describe motherhood in three words

Fun / Hardwork / Rewarding

Does your experience differ from your Mother’s – how?

Completely different - I was an only child so she just had me, whereas I have 5!!  My mum is very meticulous about cleaning and everything having its place, whereas I am more relaxed.  She hates coming to the chaos of my house!!

What’s the hardest thing about being a mum?

The sleep deprivation!!  I think in the early days it is expected and your body helps you cope with it, but when it continues well past those first few weeks it's a killer!  Trying to be patient when you are tired is something that needs to be worked hard at.

What’s the best thing?

The unconditional love, the cuddles, watching them grow into intelligent, happy (most of the time) young people.

How has it changed you?

I have been a parent now for over half my life so that's a tough question.  I'm certainly more organised - well with 5 you just have to be!!

What do you fear for them?

I fear that their childhoods are slipping away far too quickly.  I used to love exploring my local village, building dens etc.  Nowadays you are worried if they wander too far and they would stay in glued to a games console given half a chance!

What makes it all worthwhile?

Those WOW moments - first steps / words / when they have that light bulb moment and suddenly understand what you have been teaching them.  When they are older a grunted "thanks mum" or "love you" means the world too!

You know you are turning into your Mother when........

You ask you're child of they were born in a barn when they neglect to shut the door (clearly not as I'm pretty sure I was there)

You go through the names of all your children before you get to the right one

Your children know they're really in trouble if the middle names come out

You tell off other peoples children if their parents are nowhere to be seen

You use the phrase "you treat this house like a hotel"

You ask the children to "Turn that infernal racket down"

Music was so much better when you were growing up (erm Bros, Mel & Kim, 2 Unlimited - maybe not)

You want to watch the News but the kids have other ideas

You tell the kids you are not their own personal slave (clearly you are)

You refer to yourself as Mums Taxi

You moan that the kids have a better social life than you!

You spit on a tissue to remove a bit of grime from your child's face

So come on, tell me - how do you know you're turning into your mother??

What did you used to watch as a kid?

My 11 year old son has got really into the new series of Thundercats, and it has got me thinking about all the programs I used to love as a child.

Do you remember any of these?

So, these were my favourites although I can think of a couple more - what were yours?

Organix Tomato and Carrot Veg and Oat Bars - A Review

My daughter Eliza is a massive fan of the Organix brand, in particular their Gingerbread men and their Spicy Tomato stars

I reguarly buy products from the Organix range so I was delighted to receive some of their new Tomato & Carrot flavoured Veg & Oat bars to test and review.

The Veg and Oat Bars are part of the Goodies range of organic snacks have been specially made for toddlers from 12 months plus. Organix know that young children have different needs to adults and thanks to their No Junk Promise their foods contain the goodness of organic ingredients with absolutely no added salt, processed sugars or nasty additives.

Organix Tomato and Carrot Veg and Oat Bar
The packaging is bright and attractive and once the box is open, you discover that each bar is individually wrapped, so perfect to pop into a handbag or changing bag, without the need for a snack pot.
Once opened the bars are moist but not too crumbly.  They are quite long and narrow, so perfect for holding in small hands.  I found it easier to break into chunks for Eliza as she is only just one, but her 3 year old brother can manage to hold the whole bar nicely.
If your little one is a savoury food lover then they will enjoy these bars.  Eliza likes them and I think she has as much fun taking the bar apart as eating it.  The bars taste of tomato rather than carrot - in fact it tastes a lot like Pizza, but it isn't a particularly strong taste that would overpower a young palette and one bar will last a whole day for her (eating little and often)
Isaac on the other hand is not a fan of this flavour - he prefers the sweeter fruit varieties such as Raspberry and Apple - it's all down to personal taste.

I highly recommend all of the Goodies range, which is available at most supermarkets.  These Veg & Oat bars are currently on sale at a reasonable £2.49.  Organix has also launched an online shop where you can have a look at all the other varieties they offer.

If you want to keep updated with Organix offers, weaning tips and recipe ideas for all the family why not sign up to their baby club and receive a free recipe folder!

Is Facebook the right place to raise a complaint?

I was sat reading the Facebook wall of my favourite restaurant this morning, hoping we may have won a Mothers Day competition, when I saw a long rambling complaint from a customer posted on a Facebook wall!

Now I am guilty of sending a tweet if a company has done something wrong, but most companies are now social media savvy and have done their very best to resolve any situation and I have always said thank you and made sure I tweeted back.

Things happen, whether we like it or not. I used to work in retail for a number of years and have been screamed at, spat at, had things thrown at me for a number of reasons. It is amazing what upsets some people and the reaction it brings. I'll never forget the lady that was adamant that her coupons hadn't come off her bill and even when I sat down with her and re-calculated her shopping bill to prove all her discounts had come off, she was adamant they hadn't and left the store threatening legal action against me!

Anyway, I digress. This complaint mainly surrounded the fact that the restaurant refused to accept at £20 note that ceased to be legal tender in June 2010. The restaurant manager advised that they could take the note to the bank and they'd possibly exchange it, but the customer took offence to this.

If a bank note is no longer legal tender it cannot be used - FACT!

A complaint was also raised about the speed of service. Very valid, but I think everyone was caught on the hop but the unusual warm weather at the weekend.

I have to say that the restaurant concerned as handled the complaint very well and have responded on Facebook with a well worded reply and have invited the customer to email or phone them with any other concerns, but surely they should have emailed first and not facebooked.

I am sure loyal customers, such as I will brush off the comments, but it's true what they say - if you've had good service you'll only tell a couple of people, if you've had bad you'll tell everyone! Now with Facebook and twitter that statement is more true than ever!

I for one have learned a valuable lesson. I'm going to think before I tweet, and never complain on a Facebook wall!

Blogger Wedding Album

The gorgeous Tara Cain has done it again and come up with a project to melt even the toughest of hearts:

Blogger Wedding Album

It will contain your wedding photo, your name and a link to your blog.

The toughest part was choosing a picture, but for me it has to be this one:

My step-dad took this picture and he thinks that I am saying "Got you at last!".  In fact, I was trying to catch his eye for some reassurance!

So  - now it's your turn....................................I cannot wait to see!!

The Gallery - Light

I adore this picture of my boys holding hands!

It was taken at Moors Valley Country park and is my entry into The Gallery and light!

Blogbusters

When I opened this meme from the very lovely trickycustomer the first words I saw were: "Don’t worry this is not a quiz."........................... Phew

This is new meme of sorts that gives us all a chance to share what blogs we’ve been reading and which posts have left a lasting impression on us. Tell your readers which blog posts have made you laugh, cry, think OMG! or just got you thinking.

It might just be a photograph that really touched you. Doesn’t have to be a written post. Although the idea is that you mention posts you’ve been reading or perhaps revisited that week, the posts themselves don’t have to have been written that same week (still with me?). You don’t have to fill out all the entries, you may still be waiting for that WOW post or perhaps you are still looking for that post to inspire you. Just fill out what you want to.

(Oh and don’t forget to add the nifty badge below to your page.)

Laugh:   This is an easy one for me.  If ever I am feeling in need of a lift, I go and re-visit this post:  Monkey Jungle by the very funny and brilliant The Dorset Chronicles - Diary of a Farmers Wife

Have Goosebumps / Cry:  It has to be Regaining My Life by Innocent Charms Chats it made me re-visit my own issues, but I have not yet found the courage to blog about them.

Smiles:  Saying Goodbye to Dental Floss Knickers by Northern Mum - brilliantly written and oh so true.

Feel Inspired:  Help Me by the very special This Mummy Loves - she is organising a fund raiser for a very special little boy whom she has never met (yet).

Angry:  Child Benefit Cock Up by The Mummy Blogger.  I am not angry with her, but with the broken system that appears to be trying to stop parents from working!

Bookmark to Read again:  THe Dorset Chronicles - Diary of a Farmers Wife - my second entry for this blog, but all her posts are just genius!

Say OMG!:  You're Patriotic to the Point of being Racist - a brilliantly written post by My Cuntry Manor

Feel Hungry:  Pretty much every recipe English Mum posts makes my mouth water!

Say WOW:  I love Sticky Fingers blog by Tara Cain.  I love photography and look forward to The Gallery linky every week.  Her photographs are stunning!

Dinosaur Train - A Review

My son is learning about Dinosaurs at school, so when I was asked to review the new animated series on Nick Jr called Dinosaur Train, I jumped at the chance.

Dinosaur Train

Dinosaur Train appealed to me straight away as it is animated by the Jim Henson Company, whom I fondly remember from my childhood.  It is set in a whimsically prehistoric world of jungles, swamps, active volcanoes and oceans.

The main star of Dinosaur Train is Buddy, who is a curious T-Rex adopted by a family of Pteranodons.  In the first episode we discover that his "Mum" adopted him as an egg and hatched him along with her eggs.  His siblings are Don, Tiny and Shiny

Each adventure starts with Buddy asking questions and with the help of his Mum and the Conductor on the train, he goes on adventures to get the answers.

Dinosaur Train

The first episode we were introduced to a family of Stygimolochs, which if I am honest caused a great deal of stifled giggles from the older children in the family (pronounced Stigey Mollocks).  The episode was fun, informative and colourful.  The show uses real life dinosaur names and gives good explanations of each dinosaur, why they look like they do and how they live.

Dinosaur Train has really brought the world of dinosaurs to life in a friendly way for young children.  Isaac cannot wait to go to school and tell his friends about what he has learn't.  The website is fabulous too with a field guide, games, videos and pictures to print and colour in.

I was concerned that it may be too old for Isaac at almost 4, but he loves it.  We just need to work on the pronunciation of some of the dinosaur names now!

Dinosaur Train starts on Nick Jr on Monday 12th March at 4pm - don't miss it!!

Is Sterilisation the answer?

This is quite a sensitive subject with me at the moment, but I need to make a decision.

Is sterilisation the answer?

I have 5 children - the oldest 18 and the youngest has just turned 1.  Apparently I should be thinking of ways to stop having another baby!  Various family members ask if hubby has had the snip yet, and threaten to corner him with a pair of bricks when they find out he hasn't ouch.

I was looking into a new sterilisation technique for women yesterday called Essure, which does not require any cutting into the body. Instead, a gynaecologist inserts soft, flexible micro-inserts through the body’s natural pathways (vagina, cervix, and uterus) and into your fallopian tubes.

  • No cutting, burning or scarring

  • No going under general anaesthesia

  • No hormones

  • No guessing - your doctor can confirm when you can rely on Essure for contraception

  • Freedom from the pain and recovery time of a tubal ligation

  • Short procedure time - Essure only takes about 10 minutes to perform

  • Whilst this all sounds fabulous, I am just not sure I am ready to take such a drastic step.  The question is am I being selfish?
    • I have 5, gorgeous healthy children
    • I am nearly *whispers* 38
    • I had Gestational Diabetes with my last two pregnancies that required insulin treatment
    • If we had another, could we afford it?
The thought of not being able to make that choice makes me well up.  I always wanted 6 children (I have no idea why) and I think that still languishes at the back of my mind.

Hubby is adamant he doesn't want any more, my parents think we have too many already and I think my oldest would disown me (albeit briefly).

So, do I leave it for a couple of years and see how we feel, or just bite the bullet and make the decision now?

    My Birthday Meme

It isn't my birthday for a fair few months, but I have been tagged by the lovely @mummyglitzer to take part in a linky set up by The Five F's, where we all discover facts about the day we were born.

    On my birthday

    When is your birthday?

    21st June

Pick three people who share your birthday and what you know about them?

Prince William - what's not to know.......... Future King, married to Kate, got a dog called Lupo

Brandon Flowers - lead singer of The Killers (love that band)

Anne Kirkbride - Deidre in Coronation Street and used to wear "those" glasses

Is anyone listed as being born on the same day (ie same year)? If so, what do you know about them?

A few International sports people, but none I recognise.  The only Brit is a Radio presenter called Natasha Desborough and I have never heard of her either!

List three people who died on your birthday and what you know about them

Louis III - Cardinal of Guise in 1621.  The only one I have heard of and that's only because he is Royal.

List three notable events that took place on your birthday

It's the Summer Solstice, so every year the druids descend on Stonehenge.  It's the longest day of the year, so more time to celebrate!!!

Princess Diana gave birth in 1982 to Prince William Arthur Philip Louis

US troops take Okinawa in 1945

Tell us about a holiday that falls on your birthday

It's World Humanist Day apparently!  According to the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), the day is a way of spreading awareness of Humanism as a philosophical life stance and means to effect change in the world. It is also seen as a time for Humanists to gather socially and promote the positive values of Humanism...........yep told you!!!!

OK, so now it's my turn to tag some of you lovelies:

    @innocentcharmer

    @mummy_loves

    @cherylp59

    @gidders1

    @mummyconstant

Silver Foot, Hand or Fingerprint Charm Offer

Many of you have read my blog post on the my friends' company Eternal Impressions, which makes beautiful keepsake items and has been established in this market for over 8 years.
I had sterling silver fingerprint charms of my older children made almost 4 years ago, and a footprint of my then baby son. When Eliza was born last year I added a charm of her footprint to my bracelet too.

My sister-in-law has just one child and had her daughter's hand and foot print on her bracelet, inscribed with her name and handprint on one and date of birth and foot on the other.  It really is a lovely keepsake and we both treasure ours.

Although it is too late to order your charms and receive them in time for Mother's Day, you can still order one and give Mum the printing kit on the day itself, and then have fun making prints of your fingers, hands and/or feet on the day.  Simply post the kit back to Sarah when you're done (in a pre-paid envelope) and she will turn your masterpieces into a silver charm like the one above.  You can choose between circles, hearts or a square shape.

Sarah has a fabulous offer for facebook and twitter followers, of a FREE Circles bracelet RRP £20, with every fingerprint or casting charm order (while stocks last).

    Eternal Impressions
This really is an offer not to be missed!  Simply quote "CIRCLES" when you check out!  (This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer)
    Eternal Impressions
Please also "like" Eternal Impressions on facebook, as when they reach 500 followers, they will be launching a competition to win £100 vouchers to spend with them.  You can also follow Sarah on twitter @eternal_Sarah.

Justin Fletcher - Hands Up - The Interview

If you have been following my blog for a while, you will know that I went on an all out offencive at the end of last year to get Justin Fletcher and his single Hands Up to Christmas number 1.  Sadly he didn't make the Top 100 but his single did get out there on twitter and kids and parents alike were boogying along.

When Louise from @rockbabyworld emailed me to see if I would like to interview Justin, how could I say no?

So today (Tuesday 6th March) I followed Richard Bacon on Radio 5 Live and interviewed the great man himself:

"Let me begin by saying thank you for entertaining my children for the last 10 years on shows like Tikkabilla and Tweenies

Thank you, I actually started out on kids TV 17 years ago on a Saturday morning show called Fun Song Factory singing children's songs, many of which are on the album Hands Up

What made you want to bring out an album now?

I do a lot of family festivals and large events such as Camp Bestival which attract huge audiences and I base my show around the songs.  It is wonderful to see a sea of people, especially the mums and dads joining in with the children singing and dancing.

How did you decide which songs to include?

We talked to hundreds of children about what songs they loved to dance to.  I wanted an album that would get children and adults alike up and dancing, doing the actions.  We added a disco beat and great backing music too

Which is your favourite song from the album Hands Up?

It has to be the single Hands Up.  It was written by me and I always finish my shows with that song as it always gets the biggest reaction from the audience.

    Are you going on tour?

I am doing the CBeebies tour with a number of CBeebies favourites including Katy Ashworth, Andy Day, PC Plum, Robbie Rotten, Mike the Knight and many more.  We will feature most of the songs from the album

We love your TV shows too in our family.  What was the inspiration behind Justin's House?

I loved Crackajack and Noels House Party and wanted to do something similar for the Under 5's.  I love playing to a live audience and I think having the audience really makes the show.  Little Monster is a particular favourite as she gets the children shouting!

So, are there any similarities between Justin's House and the real Justin's House

Yes - I'm a big kid.  I collect theatre props, vehicles etc.  I own 4 Bumper Cars!

Is there going to be a new series of Justin's House?

Yes, I am excited to announce that it has just been commissioned for another 25 episodes!

My children loves Gigglebiz too, in fact it is funnier than most adult comedy shows.  Where do you get your influence for characters?

I love sketch shows and I wanted to make a pre-school Fast Show.  Some of the characters are over 15 years old!

Which one do you enjoy playing the most?

Everyone asks that!  I can't answer - Gail Force, Deena Lady, Arthur Sleep.............

Ok, so which one are you most like in real life?

Professor Muddles without a doubt as I am so clumsy!

Something Special is probably one of my favourites as I adore Mr Tumble and have always been surprised at how quickly my children pick up the signing.  Will there be a new series of that?

Yes - we have also been commissioned for another series of 25 episodes.  I love going out and about to schools and meeting the children.  I am always surprised at how quickly they pick up the signing too.

I think it makes a real difference to children with special needs

There is no other show like it.  It is the only CBeebies show in the schedule that never moves from its 9.45am slot.  Teaching Makaton is wonderful and it really helps children who have no other way of communicating.

I have to ask, will there be any new additions to the Tumble family?

Yes, we have a brain storming session in about three weeks

    Can I make a suggestion for a 00Tumble - Super Spy?

HaHa, I have heard that mentioned before - I shall write it in my diary.  Secret Agent Tumble!

We saw you filming Mr Tumble's Day Out in Bournemouth, was it fun to film?

Yes, it was a beautiful day and we really enjoyed ourselves.  We have to keep where we are filming quite quiet as if children see Mr Tumble they all want to come and say Hello!"

Sadly I ran out of time for more questions, but can honestly say that Justin Fletcher obviously enjoys making children's TV and has no plans to stop.  He is genuine and honest and was really lovely to chat too - I had no reason to be nervous.

Justin was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours for services to "children's broadcasting and the voluntary sector" and has won two Childrens BAFTA awards in 2008 and 2010.

So what is my opinion of Hands Up the album?

Suffice to say that I love it!

The title single Hand Up just makes you want to get up and dance.  It has really catchy tune and has easy lyrics for the little ones to learn.  I guarantee that if you are not up and dancing that your foot will be tapping along to the beat - you just can't help yourself!

The rest of the album continues along the same theme, but with those nursery rhymes that we all grew up with and know and love.  They just have that special Justin treatment.  Included on the album are The Hokey Cokey, Music Man, The Sun has gor his Hat On, Nellie The Elephant and many more!  The album finishes with Justin's Lullaby, a really lovely way to wind down after all that excitement and dancing.

If you are trying to lose that baby weight, or just have gained a few extra pounds over Christmas, check out the Stay at Home PT's blog here for a great work out that you can do with the kids to the album.  I know I have been struggling to get on the Wii Fit without interuption so I shall be doing this for sure!

Justins album Hands Up is available in most supermarkets, Amazon and iTunes.  You can follow the great man himself on twitter @_justinfletcher and facebook plus find updates on his website about his special appearances.

Update dated 9th March 2012 - Justin is out selling the likes of Jessie J, Noel Gallagher, One Direction and Bruno Mars - Lets get him to No:1!!
