Eliza had her 2 year check today, and one of the things the Health Visitor asked was does she brush her teeth. The obvious answer was yes, she brushes her teeth after breakfast and once again when she has a bath.
The Health Visitor then asked if she had milk before bed to which I answered yes, I still breastfeed before bed. She then proceeded to reprimand me, stating that I should brush her teeth after she has milk (whether from breast or bottle), as it contains sugar. If I am honest I have never thought of that. I am in the process of weaning her off anyway, so I will be changing our routine to ensure tooth brushing happens just before they get into bed – after night time drinks!
From an early age, I have taught my children about the importance of dental hygiene by building a fun, brushing routine together. I have bought fun toothbrushes that flash which help them know how long they need to brush their teeth for, as well as toothpaste with their favourite characters on after being nagged in a supermarket.
Encouraging our children to take responsibility for their own oral care and instilling healthy habits not only helps prevent cavities, but also boosts your child’s self esteem and there are lots of fun activities to try on the Colgate website.
The one thing I have failed to do, however, is change our toothbrushes every 3 months and after watching this video I shall be ensuring I do from now on!!
