Skylanders Ultimate Battle Arcade – A Review

Skylanders are a big deal in this house, but we limit the amount of time the kids spend on technology as we find it really affects their moods, so I was delighted to see that Skylanders have teamed up with Megabloks to create a range of both construction and battle toys.

We were sent Skylanders Ultimate Battle Arcade to review.

Aimed at children age 5 plus, it is a construction set.  They have to build the Arena in which the battles have to take place.  It was far too complicated for Isaac, so we left Kian to it.  It took him about two hours to complete, but he thoroughly enjoyed himself and was very proud of the finished article.

The battle arena has suction cups on the base, so you can stick it to the table, as the games get quite feisty and you don’t want to ruin all your building.

In the pack you get Jet_vac and ShroomBroom which sit upon light up portals along with sheep, Chompie and loot.

There are 5 different games to play, and you set up your arena differently for each one.  The portals have little roller balls underneath to help them move, so this game is best played on smooth surface – even my oilcloth proved a barrier.

Treasure Chest Blaster – this is the boys favourite game, and basically involves sliding your portals with their characters as hard as you can against the orange bumpers.  The winner is the one who manages to open the treasure chest and bag all the loot!

Coin Shooter – you slide your Portal into the coins and try and land them in the arena

Battle Shuffle – you slide and aim your portal for the target zone

Portal Rumble – just aim and spin and smash your target

Turbo Target – slide to smash your target

The games do build skills and accuracy, but poor Isaac was no match for Kian and got a little upset that he didn’t win.  He did however beat Mummy!

There are also lots of little bits with this set, so it is best kept out of reach of little ones and boxed up when not in use.

If more than two of you want to play, you can buy more portals with the likes of Terrafin, Dark Spyro, Ignitor, Chop Chop and Trigger Happy.

I know Isaac has his eye on the Skylanders construction sets next for his birthday and if it gets him away from wanting his consoles all day, I will happily let him have one!!
