Braun Thermoscan 5 Review

About 4 weeks ago Sebastian was poorly, but I was surprised by my digital forehead thermometer registering his temperature as within a normal range (37.5) when he was visibly distressed and felt hot to the touch.

When I took him to the doctors and they checked his temperature with their in ear thermometer his temperature was 39.4…….I was shocked, how could a thermometer be so wrong.

Thankfully some antibiotics and calpol did the trick and he was as right as rain in a couple of days, but the problem with my thermometer was still in the back of mind when I was offered the new Braun Thermoscan 5 to review.

The Braun Thermoscan measures the infrared temperature generated in the eardrum and surrounding tissues.  The eardrum shares the blood supply with the temperature control centre of the brain, therefore temperature changes are reflected more accurately than other sites.

The Braun Thermoscan 5 is the most accurate thermometer from Braun due to its unique pre-warmed tip, which minimises the cooling effect that could result from the introduction of a cool probe tip and it helps ensure accuracy measurement after measurement.

The thermometer also has a guidance system which confirms a secure position and accurate result, it measures temperature in seconds and has an 8x memory function so you can record the results if you need to go to the doctors.  The thermometer also comes with 20 lens filters to start you off – these need to be changed after every reading.

Despite sounding like you need a degree in rocket science with all the tech involved, the thermoscan is so easy to use that even my two year old can do it and she had a wail of a time pretending she was Doc McStuffins as she took all our temperatures.

The reason I had a forehead thermometer before was that the kids hated me going near their ears with in-ear thermometers but being able to do it themselves seems to have cured this fear.

With Sebastian’s final immunisation next week I am happy that I now have an accurate, easy to use thermometer that registers an accurate temperature in seconds!
