Fairy Hunting at Furzey Gardens

A couple of weeks ago, having heard wonderful things about Furzey Gardens in the New Forest, Joanne from Charliemoos and I packed up our respective tribe and decided to pay a visit and go on a fairy hunt.

The weather forecast was grotty for the morning, but a promise of sunshine from 2pm onwards was all we needed to persuade us that we were going to have fun.  The drive from my home to Minstead takes about 40 minutes and as I drove through the New Forest I did become concerned about a huge black cloud that was ominously lurking overhead.  We arrived to a deluge of rain at exactly 2pm.

Joanne arrived shortly after me and after a bit of “Umming and Arring” we decided that we had made it this far, had changes of clothes for the small people so we would risk it.

As it was out of season, the gardens were open but not manned so we had no idea where we were going so chose to follow a snaking gravel path that lead to a large pond.  Thankfully the rain had eased by now and the sun was starting to burn away the lingering clouds.

The wind was shaking raindrops and leaves from the trees, which made for a stunning light show which sadly doesn’t show up on my camera, but did lead to the kids trying to catch the leaves.

Isaac was very proud of his catch!

Once the kids had tired of catching leaves, we headed off around the pond to see what we could find.

What we found was truly stunning!

Some glass leaves framing the roof of a wooden cottage….

and decorated the walls…

I wonder what they’ve found?

Our first Fairy Door!

Excited by their first find the kids bounded off in search of more, but not before I made Isaac stop and pose with this…

With trickling streams

and Waterfalls

It’s easy to believe that Fairies live here!

But where was the next door?

We looked…….

and looked…….

and looked…..

out of 30 possible doors, we found just one more, complete with fairy dust.

However much of the gardens had been closed off due to the rain.  The kids were not bothered though – they were playing a game of Three Little Pigs.

And I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff

Eliza and Olive decided that they were in charge next and watched over their new found Kingdom from the comfort of their throne.

We finally managed to tear them away, all a lot muddier than before we had started and headed back to the car.  Not before Joanne decided to attempt a human pyramid with the girls.

On the way out we found the Fairy Post Office, but sadly it was shut (well it was a Saturday after all).  We can’t wait to head back, but this time when it is open so we can get some more tips on where to find the other 27 doors!

One final pose, just before we cleaned them up and headed home – scared of getting dirty? Not us!!
