British Gas Smart Energy Report

If you are regular readers of my blog you will know we have been testing the new British Gas Smart Meter.  We had it installed in August and I have been updating you with our progress and even how they are being launched around the world.

The next stage in our Smart Meter journey is the Smart Energy Report (SER) which is a personalised guide to our energy habits.  Everyone who upgrades their homes to smart meters will receive a unique insight into their energy use.

With the Smart Energy Report you can see:

  • Your past hourly, daily, weekly or monthly energy usage and what it cost
  • A breakdown of what you’re spending on things like heating, hot water, cooking, lighting and appliances
  • Insights about how you use energy and personalised tips on how to save
  • Comparisons on your energy usage with similar households
If you have an online account you will receive the reports the easy way – by email.  The free online tool will be available  for you to view on britishgas.co.uk, with some details about your energy consumption actually displayed live.
If you don’t have an online account they can even send you a free summary of the report in the post seven days after each bill.
To receive the most detailed reports you need to opt for the Smart Meter to take half-hour readings or for less detailed readings you can opt for daily meter readings.
The SER is the next step in increasing energy efficiency and it has been fascinating comparing our energy usage to last year.  We don’t have the full online report yet, but I have taken these graphs from my British Gas app on my phone:

As you can see we have made more savings on our gas than electricity but I am pleased with our progress so far.

The full SER report will be available to me soon and will look like this.

  3. This is what british gas say

Simple graphs and charts show you where you use your energy and where money goes.
Your gas and electricity consumption is broken down, so you get an “at a glance view” of your spending.
See what your consumption looks like each month or billing period and compare it against other similar households.
View the history of your energy spending to keep track of the impact of energy efficiency measures over time.

  4. Wow, these are great – how useful to be able to see exactly where your money is going and giving you that element of control.

  5. The main benefit for me of a British Gas Smart Meter would be accurate bills without having to climb over all the stuff in our garage to get a meter reading.

  6. No more meter readings! Which is great because we have one meter outside where we only have to read it when it’s pouring or covered in a snow drift, and one 9ft up in the air in the hallway which requires a stepladder, a torch, a giraffe and 20/20 vision to read accurately.

  10. Your smart energy monitor shows you how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence. So you can see what you’re spending by the minute. Knowing more about how much energy things use, will help you choose the way you use them.

  12. You can see how much you are using and what the effect of different appliances have on the meter, so you can ‘amend’ your choices. Also the bill will not be a surprise as you know what you’ve used

  17. Not having to have your meter read as it is done automatically. I hate waiting around for someone to come & read the meter 🙂
