RUBIK’S CONTINUES TO TWIST AS IT CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY

Rubiks

It’s the cube conundrum that has over 43 quintillion possible combinations but only one solution.

It’s kept kids and adults alike fascinated for generations, and this year sees the iconic Rubik’s Cube celebrating its 40th Anniversary.

First invented by Ernö Rubik in 1974 in Hungary, the world’s obsession with the Rubik’s Cube became apparent during the 1980s making the puzzle synonymous with the ‘retro’ era and becoming a symbol for this time period.

It’s unique twisting and turning action has captured the imaginations of many since those early days and with its brightly coloured tiles crossing language and cultural barriers, an estimated 350 million Rubik’s Cubes have been sold worldwide.

Rubiks Cube

The world’s obsession with solving the Rubik’s Cube has also led to ‘Speedcubing’ competitions taking place all over the globe where Cubers compete against each other to be the quickest at solving the Cube. The current world record for a single solve is held by Mats Valk from the Netherlands, whose record is an impressive 5.55 seconds. The current UK record isn’t far behind with 15 year old Alexander Lau completing the Cube in 5.96 seconds.

  1. I can get as far as 2 rows or 2 faces – otherwise I fail miserably. I have completed a cube though, but that was with the aid of a cheat sheet, so I doubt that counts!!! 🙂

  2. I never managed to complete it but I watched a young lady give a talk using the rubik cube and how life can be all over the place but once it’s on track it can be calmer and she completed the cube without losing her thread in the talk!

  4. I could never manage to do this, but my brother always seemed to be able to , then we found out he used to take the stickers off and put them back on so it made it look like he had done it.

  5. I haven’t but when I was a child I was given one, I managed to take it all apart and put it back together, and told my mum and dad I had solved the rubiks cube! It was so funny at the time, I did confess after a bit as they didn’t quite believe I had done it.

  6. I can do one side and thats it but my kids ( 16 & 19 ) can do them in less than 2 minutes. I even bought a 4 x 4 for my son a couple a months ago and he can do that one aswell

  9. I was never able to do it. When I was very young I remember taking the stickers off and moveing them to make it look as if I had completed it. My parents pretended they didn’t know what I had done.

  10. When I was little I used to sit behind my Grans armchair for ages peeling the stickers off and putting them back on, then I would jump up and say ‘yay I did it’ I don’t think anyone ever believed me, lol! I have still never managed to do it without cheating 🙁

  13. Nope 🙁 But never had one of my own before. I’m sure if I had a few hours (or days) on my own with one I’d at least be able to complete one side lol

  14. Yes – I patiently peeled off all the stickers and re-stuck them on. Legitimately I have only ever managed 2 sides 🙁

  15. Never. When I was a child and felt humiliated not being able to do it, I just removed some of the stickers and put them back on the right place as if I’d completed the cube. However I don’t give up the hope. Maybe one day…
