How to keep your kids entertained at the airport

If you’re looking to take your family on a fun-filled adventure but are wondering which destinations are suitable, click here for more information. There are plenty of child-friendly packages available these days and while little ones can be challenging to travel with, there are a few things you can do to make the experience a little less harrowing.

Here’s how to keep them entertained at the airport:

Make the most of play areas
Many airports are well equipped with family facilities including play areas. The Family Lounge at Heathrow Airport, for instance, has a soft play area for children aged 0-2 and 3-9, a game zone for children aged 10-15 and a discreet area for nursing mothers. There are plenty of tables and chairs for parents as well as various vending machines to keep your youngsters refreshed. Play and Stay areas for kids can also be found at terminals 1, 2, 4 and 5, so why not stay there until your flight is called to avoid any unnecessary stress?

Take plenty of toys
While hand luggage restrictions are in place at UK airports, it’s important to take as many toys as you can. Little ones get bored easily, so make sure they’ve got plenty of things to keep them entertained. Want to spice things up a little? Then go to the pound shop before you leave and buy an array of goodies. Cover them in wrapping paper and give them to your child throughout the course of the airport stay and flight. Not only will this give them something to do but it’ll be a little pre-holiday treat for them to enjoy.

Eat and drink
Most children love to eat and drink, so sit them down and order something yummy for them to feast on. As airport food is expensive, you might want to pack a picnic or stop at the supermarket before you arrive, but remember, you can’t take liquids above 100ml through check-in. Sandwiches and other substantial foods are good but avoid sugary snacks as this could cause your kids to be hyper inflight – not recommended.

Make a fuss of the planes
Has your child been to the airport before? If not they might be fascinated by the planes. Let them stare out the window or take them onto the viewing deck for a closer look at these amazing creations. Try to answer any questions they have and explain as much as you can to them about taking off and landing so they know what to expect when they get on board.  If they’re interested you could even get them to draw their own plane before colouring it in.

While airports might not seem very thrilling there’s plenty you can do to keep young minds entertained, so follow these top and enjoy a hassle-free journey.
