Summer has left and the children are now settled back into school, however it is just 4 weeks until they break up for Half Term and my thoughts are already turning to what we can do to keep them entertained.
Most days out now will involve some form of travel, especially as the weather turns and the nights draw in and I have teamed up with First Hull Trains to get tips on travelling by train with children as train journeys can be a little more challenging if you have the small people in tow.
First Hull Trains are offering free train tickets for anywhere on their route to one of my readers and their family* who leave their best tip below just in time for the half term break! (*up to two adults and two children)

Roll up clothes and they take up less room and don’t crease
Make sure you pack treats throughout the journey, little surprises for every 30 mins they last on the train or something.
If you have a toilet training child make a mental note of the closest toilets for those quick dashes.
Make sure you pack toys, games or books to keep everyone entertained.
‘I spy’ books are great for children, they love watching through the window and spotting things on the way. Also some washable pens and note books so they can draw what they see. Its graet to book a table so you can all sit together and join in.
Lots of colouring books
Take a bottle of frozen water, then you can have an ice cold drink into the Journy which should last for a few hours
Encourage your child’s natural curiosity and engage their sense of adventure for the trip. Eg) get them excited about where you are going, looking to find the stop on the big board, finding your compartment/seat, spotting things out of the window, hunting for the train driver by waking through the carriages etc
Take plenty to keep them entertained – colouring, magazines, DVDs, anything you can carry!
make sure you pack something to keep them entertained
Always photocopy your passport and travel documents and keep on your person in case of theft
Being organised, small fold up buggy. not too much luggage but colouring in or small games for the children to keep them occupied
dont over pack
My kids love playing ‘The first one to spot….’ game! ….ask them to spot something out of the window..eg..the first one to spot a…horse, cow, bird, etc… reward the ‘winner’ with a little treat!!…I’ts free, no carrying bulky games, etc! and, most of all it’s fun, and, keeps them occupied for ages!
Not to over pack!
Take plenty of games to keep them occupied
Try and travel lightly but make sure you have some activities at hand for long journeys
I always ensure I carry wipes – handy for mopping up spills and sticky hands – keeps us all on track!
travel light, but travel smart!
Start off with a short journey
Favourite toys – we always take my daughters little Thomas the Tank Engine toys and they would keep her entertained for hours and even though at the time she was only 2 people would comment on her good behaviour.
take some crayons and a colur book for something to do 🙂
Play games such as I spy and sing songs and nursery rhymes to pass the time more quickly!
Take some activities and snacks
