An array of seating ranging from the weird to the wonderful has appeared on our TV screens over the years and we thought we’d take this opportunity to celebrate some of most iconic.
Martin Crane’s recliner
One of the running jokes of the hit US sitcom Frasier is the ugly armchair that father Crane, Martin, has introduced to his son Frasier’s otherwise impeccably decorated apartment.
This stripy green, red and yellow chair is distinctly dog-eared and definitely out of place in the modern flat, much like its owner. The object is the trigger of many arguments between Martin and Frasier, who would prefer to see it banished from the room.
The captain’s chair from Star Trek
Star Trek is iconic in its own right, and the captain’s chair that takes pride of place on the bridge of the Enterprise epitomises the show. Even now, decades after it was first introduced, this item has a futuristic appearance. The angular, swivelling seat with buttons on both arms has featured in many a fraught scene over the years.
The Simpson’s couch
If you’re ever looking for a way not to run a family home, you can reliably turn to the Simpsons and it transpires that Marge and Homer’s taste in living room furniture is as unfortunate as many of the scrapes the duo get into. The polite description for the brown sofa that features in the animation’s opening credits is ‘homely’.
Father Jack’s chair
In the Irish sitcom Father Ted, the character of Father Jack is typically a little inebriated, and it’s just as well. If he were ever sober, he may realise exactly how unattractive the chair in which he spends virtually all of his time actually is. This antiquated beige monstrosity is almost as much of an eyesore as the individual who adorns it.
Norm’s bar stool
Sticking with the theme of alcohol, Norm’s bar stool from Cheers is definitely worthy of making the shortlist. This piece of furniture may not have been the comfiest in the world, but there was nowhere else that the character would rather have been. This trusty stool with is red leather padding propped up the man who spent all of his time propping up the bar.
Mastermind Chair
Perhaps the most well-known chair of all is the black, official looking leather one that features in the quiz show Mastermind. It has appeared on the show for more than 40 years and is made particularly distinctive by the intense spotlight that shines on it.
Feeling inspired?
If all this talk of chairs has got you feeling inspired to buy some new seating for your home, you certainly won’t be stuck for options. There is now a dizzying array of chairs to choose from. Of course, you might not want to go for anything as outlandish as these TV icons.
The good news is, there are lots of attractive and practical products on offer. For example, if you suffer from mobility problems, you may be interested in the riser recliner chairs offered by Adjustamatic. These products feature therapeutic Cyclo-Therapy technology and they eliminate any problems associated with getting into and out of armchairs.
