LockBlock Knife Block Review

As a parent with young children at home and a childminder, safety is paramount in our house.  In fact sometimes I think we are over-cautious as we have door locks, fridge locks, plug covers, safety gates and door cushions all over the house.  Sometimes it is frustrating getting past these things, especially when you are in a hurry.

When it comes to sharp kitchen knives I used to hide them away in a drawer but my kids are inquisitive monkeys and can reach ours quite easily.  I do have a wooden knife block, but even that has to be hidden away in a child-locked cupboard which is far from ideal, so when I was sent the LockBlock to review, I was eager to get it out the box and try it out.

Lockblock is an innovative, child-proof and self locking knife block. This revolutionary kitchen product provides the perfect solution to young children’s safety in the kitchen as it actually locks kitchen knives safely inside itself and requires an adult-sized hand to operate it, meaning that most children aged 5 and under will be unable to remove any knife.

Lockblock

As each knife is placed inside a knife slot, its blade is held securely by the unique Cam-lock™ mechanism. Pulling on a knife only increases the force of the grip so knives cannot be simply forced out of the block.

To remove a knife from LockBlock™ the release button, situated on either side for left and right-handed operation, needs to be firmly pressed. But due to its position and the force required to press it, only someone with an adult-sized hand can do this. The mechanism inside won’t damage expensive knife blades as it has a smooth rubber surface.

The LockBlock™ itself comes in black which I love as it matches my kitchen, but I do love the colour flashes on the knives that match the inserts.  The grip on the side is a lovely lime colour and is super simple to use – simply squeeze and pull out your chosen knife.  Hubby was determined it wouldn’t work and tried to remove a knife without squeezing the hand grip but to no avail.

We have also tested it with Isaac (6) and Eliza (4) and both are unable to squeeze the grip to get the knives out so I am confident it works well.  I finally have accessible knives for the first time in years so no more scrabbling about trying to get childproof cupboards open to find the knife I need………just wish I had invented it!

There are two LockBlock’s to choose from:

LockBlock™ 6 piece knife block set – This set comes with knives which are forged from Japanese 420J2 stainless steel and have precision, taper-ground edges for effective use. Their ergonomic handles have a textured, nonslip grip and a large bolster to help protect fingers. They are also colour-coded to match their corresponding knife slot. RRP: £150

LockBlock™ Knife block – The LockBlock can be used with your current set of knives.  RRP: £60

  1. What a grat idea! I always worry about F getting hold if our knives so have them so high up it’s impractical for cooking. This would be so much easier plus they look great too! X
