Today we finally had an ENT appointment for Sebastian that we have been waiting month for and it all feels a bit like a waste of time.
We were referred via my GP after my Health Visitor had concerns about his lack of speech and the fact he snores – badly. A visit to the GP confirmed he has enlarged adenoids and seemed more susceptible to tonsillitis and sore throats as he seems to get one almost ever month, although he did have a bit of a break over the summer.
We were with the consultant for all of ten minutes. He checked his ears, which were fine. His nose, which was quite dry and what he thinks is the cause of his snoring, and the back of his throat where he said there was no-sign on tonsillitis. Sadly if he had seen him two weeks ago, there would have been more to see.
Because I don’t take Sebby to the GP every time he has problems with his throat because they just send me home saying it is a “viral infection” with a recommendation for calpol and fluids, the consultant says it isn’t documented that he has had issues more than 7 times in a year, despite me keeping a diary myself.
We have been referred for a hearing test, but I feel like we are back to square one. No doubt my GP will be sick of me by he end of the winter if I have to visit every time Sebby has problems with his throat.
Much as I don’t want him to have unneccessary medical treatment, the fact that every time he has the merest sniffle and it goes to his throat, I know something isn’t right.
🙁 My eldest had chronic tonsil problems, sleep apnoea because of them, enlarged adenoids, he was deaf with glue ear from it all and he was always ill. His tonsils were so big they were blocking his throat so they took them out 6 weeks after he saw ENT. However we had seen the general pediatrician from 9mths-2years and he didn’t pick up on it. I was sent away as a fussing first time mother even though I knew something was wrong. It’s very hard when it’s not taken seriously. Do you have a follow up appointment? I would go to your GP every single time now so that its on record even if its a pain 🙁
That is what I intend to do, the poor mite is ill as much as he is well, especially over the winter months!
