On my Christmas list every year as a child was a Scaletrix, but sadly I never owned my own although my step-brother had one so I did manage to get a look in every now and again.
I have always wanted to get one for the kids and indulge in a spot of racing but sadly the older boys were never really interested so again we didn’t get one much to my disappointment.
A couple of weeks ago we were invited to review the Go MINI Night Challenge Raceway from Golden Bear Toys and very selflessly I agreed to review it.
The set invites you to take your racing skills up a gear with the new with its all-white track and fun striking graphics and I was excited by the Dual Speed Switching technology which allows me to choose the right level of driving ability for the kids. Sebastian and Eliza are set to ‘low’ speed so the car will never leave the track and Isaac and Kian are switched to ‘high’ speed for an added turbo boost which sends the cars zooming around the bends.
The track can also be enjoyed by a single player as they race against the pace car, the speed of which can also be controlled. For ultra-cool street action the underside of the cars glow as they race around in the dark. With this amazing track set, no racing adventure is too big, or too fast!
I have to admit that putting the set together is a real challenge. I would advise you put the 8 x AA batteries in first as although assembling the track pieces is easy enough, the barriers and signs are a complete nightmare as the plastic is too stiff to bend them around the track. There is an AC outlet but sadly that is not included in the box which is a real shame.
Once assembled the kids had a blast and played with it solidly for over an hour, taking it in turns to have a go and race each other. The high-speed level caused much laughter as the cars span off the track but it was the night racing that got the most love as the cars glowed red and blue as they raced around the track.
The batteries are now starting to wane after constant use so I would recommend you get rechargeable ones if possible as this will save you a fortune. I finally have a racing car set in the house and ALL the kids love it!
Anyone fancy a race?
I want to race definitely… I was always jealous of my two brothers and their scaletrix, though it did usually descend into an argument as to who cheated x
My brother got a Scalextric one year and I remember a lot of arguments over who got to be red and who got stuck with blue as we quickly figured out the blue was slower.
Having kids is awesome for getting those toys you missed out on in childhood. I asked for a Mr. Frosty one year but I never got one. Years later I bought one from a charity shop and turns out he was actually pretty crap. LOL.
We had a scalextric when Liam was little and it was rubbish so I’ve been put off buying stuff like this ever since, thankfully Bugs has never asked for anything like it lol x
This looks amazing! I am so excited for when Boo is a bit older and I can buy lots of lego sets for her that I want to have! hehe
That really is a brilliant toy and my little ones (the boy and the girls) would love it! So would I actually! It’s the kind of present a cool uncle would get for their nephew. We’ll see how cool my brothers are in a couple of weeks!
I bought a few scaletrix for my eldest when he was younger but they ended up getting ruined or not played with! Im hoping my youngest enjoys them more!! 🙂
My H would love this for sure. It’s a classic toy isn’t it?
It’s a shame it was tricky to put together, as that’s a big influence for me when buying stuff. I agree they are a lot of fun though
This looks so great – I think Pickle needs to be a little older for a racing set or he will get so frustrated. Lovely review 🙂 Kaz x
I have a feeling this will be a huge hit in my house 🙂 With the child and both his parents!
