Which films should every child see before they grow up?

As a family that spend a lot of time outside, it is a real treat to sit down and watch a film, snuggled on the sofa with a bucket (or two) of popcorn.

When the older kids were young we had every single Disney film on video and I am still replacing them with DVD’s or digital copies, although with Netflix and Amazon Prime about these days I don’t really need to now.

I asked my kids what there favourite films are to watch, with some choosing modern films and others some more traditional offerings:

Hubby: Goonies

Abbey: The Little Mermaid

Callan: Thunderbirds

Kian: Magic Roundabout

Isaac: How to Train Your Dragon

Eliza: Trolls

Sebastian: Cars

Me: Jungle Book

Educational film charity, Into Film, have compiled a list of 50 films to watch before the age of 11, and are offering one lucky prize winner the chance to win ALL 50 of the entire collection on DVD – perfect to help get through any rainy days in the summer holidays.

Must see movies

The films were chosen alongside film industry experts for their ‘timeless factor’, life lessons and diversity. From animation classics to modern day blockbusters, these are definite must-sees for children to help develop their understanding of the wider world.

  1. It’s a toughie as there are so many but I still watch the original JUNGLE BOOK now about once a month or so, you can’t beat it so it has to be that one.

  2. Its a close thing between Mary Poppins and Nanny McPhee but I think Mary Poppins just about wins because of the singing and dancing

  3. Like my children I love Mary Poppins, but someone else also mentioned Disney’s Robin Hood, which I agree is my favourite fully animated children’s film of all time.

You remind me of the babe.
    What babe?
    The babe with the power.
    What power?
    The power of voodoo.
    Who do?
    You do.
    Do what?
    Remind me of the babe!

  11. argh such a hard choice when I was growing up I loved a film called Savannah Smiles and The Sound of Music.

If I had to choose just one ow though it would be either Beauty and the Beast or The Jungle book (the animated version for both although the new ones are also excellent)

  13. I must agree with your husband, The Goonies was a childhood favourite of mine that remains with me today and is a great choice for all children, I’ve shown my boys it and it’s now one of their faces!

  14. The Goonies. I still love it now but still haven’t managed to get my husband to watch it all. I don’t remember all the language when I was a kid though so it must have been dubbed for telly!
