How do you get Vitamin D into your child’s daily diet?

For a variety of reasons, many children are not getting enough vitamin D to stay healthy.

Vitamin D is vital to aid normal growth and development of bones in children.

The top way of getting vitamin D is to get the kids out and about in the sunshine, exposing some of their bare skin to the sunlight, but with skin health being in the news frequently and the daily use of sunscreen, it is becoming increasingly difficult for some people to get enough vitamin D from the sun.

Like many parents, I am guilty of over-protecting my kids from the sun. At the beach they wear UV suits and sunscreen and in the summer I coat them with factor 50 before they go to school.

Of course, this summer we have also been blessed with more than our fair share of rain too, so the kids have been wearing raincoats and wellies.

So how do you get vitamin D into the kids?

The best source is obviously to get the kids outside, but you can boost their levels with food. Fresh fish is a great source of vitamin D, but if you kids are anything like mine, they won’t let an an ounce pass their lips.

Petits Filous, the No 1 kids fromage frais brand in the UK, features calcium for healthy bone development and now more vitamin D, to help with absorption. Plus, Petits Filous has now reduced the amount of sugar in each serving whilst maintaining its great taste.

Over the last 10 years, the nutrient profile of Petits Filous small and big pots has been improved with meaningful decreases in the sugar content in the core range
and meaningful increases to be rich in vitamin D.

Each serving (x2 small pots or x1 big pot) contains 50% of the Nutrient Reference
Value (NRV) vitamin D (the current NRV for labelling purposes).

The added bonus is that my kids love Petits Filous. We love freezing Petits Filous Pouches for a deliciously cool snack that can be enjoyed al fresco with a picnic, or in the kids lunchboxes. It makes eating away from home so easy as you don’t need a spoon.

Sebastian has now moved on from the small size pots and on to the big pots with Eliza and Isaac and thankfully all the flavours are a hit, but it is the Magic Squares strawberry and vanilla, or raspberry and vanilla that are the firm favourite and are always snuck into my shopping basket when I am not looking!

  1. That’s so great that they have more vitamin D – it’s such a hard balance between getting vitamin D and protecting kids from the sun so products like this really help.

  4. I didn’t think about Petit Filous having Vitamin D! That’s great! My little ones scoff them down like there’s no tomorrow. We tend to spend a lot of time outdoors, but don’t worry I’m probably a bit too overprotective from the sun! Haha
