Project Mc2 Pixel Purse Review

Netflix’s Project Mc is one of Eliza’s favourite television series.

It is set in a fictional city called Maywood Glen, California, and revolves around the fields of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths).

The series follows the adventures of McKeyla McAlister and her best friends, who work for a government organisation called NOV8 (pronounced “innovate”), a highly secretive group of teenage female government operatives who are trying to protect the world. These super-smart girls become secret agents who use their science and tech skills to save the day.

In a word where women are severely underrepresented in STEM careers and perceive them as too difficult or boring, this series is helping to make STEM the norm for young girls and will hopefully prove that these careers are viable and fun as they grow up.

There is a fabulous range of toys to accompany the series and encourage a love of science and we have already reviewed the H20 Remote Control Car, which is a very popular toy with Eliza and her brothers.

Last week we received the Project Mc2 Pixel Purse to review.

The Pixel Purse takes it name from the American word for handbag and is about the size of a clutch bag. It cannot actually be used as a bag though as is made of hard plastic and has very little room to keep anything inside, other than a mobile phone.

The Pixel Purse features a multi-coloured LED display which can be personalised with custom designs and phrases by using the free iOS and Android apps, plus is comes ready-programmed with 10 animations so you can play straight away.

It comes with 4 x AA batteries for demonstration use and is recommended that these are replaced before you start using it.

The app is easy to use and Eliza had no problem making new pictures to display on the front of the purse. When the images are ready, simply connect the bag to your device using the cable inside the purse and watch it come to life with your very own designs.

You can program the LED lights with not just pictures, but words, fonts and even speed changes.

The purse has a small storage compartment inside that fits most phones, although we have been playing with an iPad, so it has had to sit outside. The purse also comes with an accessory hanging clip.

The Project Mc Pixel Purse is a great introduction to coding and is available from all good toy stores at an RRP of £54.99. (It is currently on offer at Smyths for £29.99 if you are quick).

  1. I love anything that encourages women into STEM: I was strongly encouraged by my dad, but not by school and peers which led me into the arts. As I now work in tech, the catch up I need to do is crazy!

  2. I absolutely love the idea behind this.My daughter aged 16 is super into tech and actually blows my mind with her knowledge (a little old for this but anything that encourages in a plus)

  3. Oh my goodness I would have loved one of these when I was a little girl! I was forever buying kids tech bits to impress my friends at school so I definitely would have purchasd this product if I’d had the chance! What a great idea, I will definitely be sharing this with friends that have kiddies!
