NHM Dippy the Diplodocus model kit review

Dippy, the Natural History Museum’s much-loved Diplodocus skeleton cast has been sent on a natural history adventure across the UK and his first stop is our home county of Dorset.

We visited Dippy in his temporary new home in the Victorian Hall at Dorset County Museum last month and the kids were fascinated by all the facts about the Diplodocus – one of the largest beasts to have ever roamed the earth.

Dippy the Diplodocus was on display from 1905 – 2016 and is now on a two-year tour of the country, so to celebrate this amazing creature the Natural History Museum have brought out a gift in a tin dinosaur model kit, so you can enjoy this amazing dinosaur in your own home.

Gift in a Tin

With over 60 pieces of laser-cut wood for you to press out and glue together, this is a fun activity for the biggest and smallest of dinosaur fans to complete together. Eliza loved pressing out the pieces but it was up to Daddy to make sure they were glued in the correct places.

NHM Gift in Tin

Once built, Dippy stands on his own Diplodocus plinth, perfect for displaying in your home.

Dippy the Diplodocus Model

Dippy measures approximately 46cm long and is available exclusively to the Natural History Museum and Dippy’s host institutions at an RRP of £18.99.

  1. My three were fascinated with Dippy when he was on display at the museum, and would love this. They had a more solid version/less parts a few years ago to put together and paint and they had great fun with it

  2. You know I am yet to see Dippy in the NHM but hopefully I could catch him up on his two year tour. I love this kit and the build you’ve done

  3. How fun! I have so many wonderful memories of going to see Dippy, but I really understand and support the reasoning for the change! I love little tin sets and bought a few for while we are travelling, such great little toys to keep little ones entertained.

  4. My son slowly develops his love for dinosaurs, I am sure that in a year or two he’ll make sure I know everything about Diplodocus 🙂 It so good that the skeleton is on a tour and kids all over the country can learn something about dinosaurs 🙂
