When you look up recipes, or go looking for cake decorating tutorials on TikTok, there’s one thing you might just notice: nearly all of the posts you see have been made by women.
It’s a bit of an interesting phenomenon, when you think about it. Women are so often striking out on their own with their culinary skills, where they can create content online and/or sell their creations from the comfort of their own home.
All in all, it seems like the home baking market is dominated by women. Why? Well, with women likely to spend much more time cooking and grocery shopping compared to men, it makes sense to monetize both the time and skills gained.
But that might not be the only reason behind female success in this industry.
Women are More Likely to Have Culinary Skills
Women are more likely to have been in the kitchen with their mothers when they were young. They’re also more likely to have been taught how to ‘keep’ a kitchen, including food storage, preparation, and cleaning. As such, women are more likely to have established, well-refined culinary skills as adults.
And these skills are put to use every single day. Cooking and baking are both life skills that everyone needs, whether it’s just yourself you’re making food for or you’re a parent with children to feed.
In truth, many women are already spending a significant portion of their waking hours preparing food and washing up afterwards.
Why not then put a price on these skills, as sharp as they are? Home baking is simply an accessible type of business to get started on, as there’s no learning curve to adapt to when creating the products you want to sell.

Working From Home Provides Flexibility
Again, this is another accessible element behind female success in the home baking industry. Your home is your office.
As such, you can wait for cakes or cookies to bake and use that time for family, self care, or other professional activities.
Start Up Costs Can Be Low
This isn’t an issue specific to being a woman or owning a business as a woman, but it is another reason why it feels so easy to monetize the cooking and/or baking skills you hold. Start up costs for a home baking business tend to run quite low.
You’ve already got a kitchen to use, as well as utensils, crockery, and pans for baking. Having all the right equipment in stock, even before you start your business, means you can more or less get straight to work.
If you do need more technical equipment, like some bale arm crates for long distance transportation, they’re easy to hire. You don’t need to sink any funds into buying them, then finding a place to store them, only to never use them again.
The amount of successful female home bakers show us that this industry is a woman’s world – and it’s a profitable one at that!
