Last year I wrote a post about why we would be trick or treating with the children and I am starting to get excited all over again whilst the kids are eagerly dreaming up their costumes.
I am really lucky that my neighbourhood are all willing to get involved, with some making a huge effort to decorate their houses as well as dressing up themselves.
I do find that it is mostly young children that get involved in Trick or Treating, although there are a few teens that insist on doing it……last year I had to prevent one from taking handfuls of sweets and got a few choice words in return, so here are my tips for a happy and safe Halloween.
- If you don’t want your door knocked, don’t put a Pumpkin outside your door and a polite note on display should keep people away
- If you are happy to receive Trick or Treaters let them know with a glowing Pumpkin or decorations on the door. Remember to have enough sweets to share
- Trick & Treaters should be accompanied by a responsible adult
- Tricks should be funny – a bag of ice cubes mixed with jelly is great for putting apprehensive hands in
- Stay local to your home and plan your route
- Start early as it will be dark as the clocks go back and no Trick or Treating after 7.30pm
- Add reflective accessories to their costume so the kids can be seen and take a torch……makes a spooky reflection as well as helping light the way
- Stick together…..don’t wander off
- Remember to stop, look and listen when crossing roads, it is easy to get distracted by all those yummy goodies
- Choose a fun, funky and bright fancy dress outfit for Halloween – it will help you be seen, but remember to wear layers underneath as it’ll be chilly
- Mum (or Dad) can get dressed up too
- Take a brolly – we are in the UK after all
- Take a spare bag, in case they fill up their treat bags too quickly
Shop around for costumes, supermarkets have some fab ones, although you will bump into a lot of children wearing the same ones. There is so much choice online these days and they dispatch all over the country. I love some of the fancy dress costumes by Elliotts in Belfast and think I’d look quite good in a long white wig!
