What was I doing 30 years ago?

Oh Britmums and Special K – what have you let yourselves in for?

I knew this was going to be a fun linky as soon as I saw it, and it always makes me cringe looking back at old photographs, but first let me tell you what this linky is about.

For the first time since 1983, Kelloggs Special K has changed its recipe.  It now contains three grains — rice, wheat and barley (previously there were two) — and is made with wholegrain, for a source of fibre as well as 8 vitamins and minerals. It gives health-conscious, weight-watching women  a tastier breakfast.

My husband really enjoys his Special K and I don’t hear a peep out of him when he is eating it so it must be good.  As for me, I have Gestational Diabetes and cannot eat it (or any cereal) at the moment as I find that they affect my readings too much, but I did sneak some and can confirm it tastes even better than it used to!

Now what was I doing in 1983?

For starters I was 9 years old, not quite at the age for a dodgy perm and shoulder pads, but my fashion taste did leave a lot to be desired.  I loved my Disco Dancing lessons and had one of those awful shiny leotards with matching leggings and leg warmers *shudder*.  I wasn’t too bad at it either – I have a few medals at my mums.

Then there was the music……. I would love to say that I was into something cool like U2, Bowie or Eurythmics, but sadly my musical taste at the time was more Keith Harris and Orville, Bananarama and Kajagoogoo!!

From TOTP in January 1983:

I went to a Convent school in Worthing, West Sussex and my best friends were Ambi, Jane and Zoe.  We weren’t naughty girls, but could be mischevious at times, messing around in choir practice and I do remember cheating in some exams by copying Ambi’s answers – sorry Sister Caroline.

Break times were all about playing French Elastic (I was very good at this), Clapping games (good at this), Skipping (not so good at this) and random throwing a tennis ball at the wall challenges?  I also remember we had quite a few Stag beetles that resided in our playground that we used to antagonise until they reacted.

I wasn’t a sporty type, but I did enjoy playing sports with Rounders and Netball being my favourite.  I lived in a small close with a few other families and in the summer we used to stage our very own sports days too.

Summer holiday’s used to be spent at the beach, the South Downs or exploring the village on our bikes.  We didn’t really have any boundaries to how far we could go and we would cycle for miles!

As for TV, I adored Dr Who and still do and Educating Marmalade was also one of my favourite programs when I got in from school.

Have I changed much?

Well, I’d like to think that my music taste has improved although my husband would be inclined to disagree.

Fashion wise, I tend to wear what is comfortable and what I think suits me – I am definitely no follower of fashion!

I don’t do sports, other than swimming with the children or a kick-a-about but I still enjoy cycling if I get the chance and as for dancing – the closest I get is a boogie at a wedding!

So this is me now, posing with two of my brood and looking more than a little rotund, but then I am 32 weeks pregnant!
