Pokémon TCG: XY Introduces Mega Evolution to Extremely Powerful Pokémon-EX Cards

Last weekend was a busy one, not only did we get to attend the Nintendo Christmas Event , but we also got to attend the Pokemon X / Y event at London Zoo.

Kian has been Pokemon mad since I can remember and still at the age age of 13 he begged me to buy him Pokemon X when it came out.  When I asked if he wanted to attend the Pokemon X / Y event he did a whoop of delight and said of course!

We got to London Zoo at lunchtime and food took a back seat.  Kian was straight off to have a look at Mega Evolution, the brand-new Pokémon Trading Card Game: XYexpansion.  He didn’t move from the gaming table and I am proud to say that he won 7 of the 9 games he played against the experts!

The 10-card booster packs arrive at retail in The UK in February, 2014. Mega Evolution Pokémon evolve from Pokémon-EX, extremely powerful cards in their own right, creating a force that will change the way Pokémon TCG players build decks and create strategies for battle.

Before players Mega Evolve a Pokémon like Venusaur-EXor Blastoise-EX, they must consider the situation carefully because doing so ends their turn immediately, which means they can’t attack. The risky move is worth the reward, however, because Mega Evolution Pokémon exhibit a strength that surpasses Pokémon-EX. Hard-hitting attacks and high HP totals make Mega Evolution Pokémon dominant during Pokémon TCG matches.

I have to say it all sounds really complicated, but Isaac joined in and soon got the hang of it. Kian has him in training at home, so they will be a real force to be reckoned with soon.

There was plenty to do for the rest of us too.  Eliza and Isaac enjoyed meeting Pikachu and telling him Mummy’s favourite joke, to which he was visibly laughing:

“How do you get Pikachu on a bus?”

“Poke-him-on!!”

They also had Pokeballs painted on their arms, did some colouring and got to play Pokemon on the 2DS that were on the tables.  Mummy got to enjoy a wonderful hand massage and the delicious cakes on offer.

Even Sebastian got in on the action by bouncing on one of the inflatable Pokemon, ably assisted by Laura from TiredMummyofTwo.

We were in there so long, that we only got to spend an hour in London Zoo, but the kids were more than happy as we had been to the zoo already this year.  We made sure we saw our favourites and had lots of fun playing up to the camera.
