How To Maximise Focus Time

When you have limited time, and you want to get the most from that time, it makes sense to start looking at ways that you can improve your output. It is important to remember that productivity isn’t just about what is produced at the end; it can just as easily be reading the most amount of text, taking your inbox, or learning.

What is focus time?

Focus time is a time that you have set aside in order to focus on a single task. Multitasking is the enemy of good focus time, so it is important that you plan your focus time with precision. 

Whatever the task at hand is, it will get your undivided focus, and you will only be focusing on producing high-quality results. 

You might hear focus time be called deep work, but there are some differences between the two. For example, focus time can be as little as 15 minutes, while deep work requires a commitment of an hour or more. 

Highlight your distractions

We all have our own distractions. Life is busy, and we have our attention pulled in many different directions. A vital part of getting the focus time you need is highlighting what your distractions are and how you can minimise them. 

One of the most distractions is social media. Social media is designed to give us little bumps of dopamine as we scroll, and what that means is that over time we are addicted to scrolling and content consuming. 

If you know that you are spending too much time on social media, one of the first steps you can take is to delete the app from your phone or, at the minimum, turn off notifications. 

There are some distractions that are super cute – like children, for example – and they can be harder to set aside to focus. This means you will need to edit your working day to accommodate that. 

What are the benefits of focus time?

Focus time gives you the much-needed block of time to tackle the tasks that you really want to get done. If your workday or hobby time is filled with interruptions (from you or others), you won’t be getting the best from yourself. 

When we switch out of the task we are doing and then go back to it, we need to build back up to get into the flow state. This can cause up to a 27% reduction in production time. 

How can you maximise your focus time?

It’s time to get into how you can create a focus time that will work for you. A combination of tools, mindset and supplements can work wonders.

We have a habit of overloading our to-do lists with a mix of bigger items and smaller ones too. Instead, it is more beneficial to set a single anchor task. The anchor task is the one thing that you need to do to get the rest of your day done. 

An alternative method is to set three important tasks that need to be done first and smaller tasks that can fill time after. 


If you notice that your high energy period is in the morning, then that is where you should set your focus time. Work with your energy levels so that tasks are no longer something you have to struggle through – instead, they are automatically easier.
